Why would God be condescending to His own image?

Because people are stupid. God delivers the people of Israel from Egypt through his mighty power and what's the first thing they do when God turns his back to give a few simple ground rules to Moses? They make a golden calf themselves and decide that they are better off worshipping this statue that they know they made themselves over the powerful benevolent deity who delivered them from oppression.
